Hobbies&Fun
We love to encourage people to try their hand at new skills. You never know when
you will discover a hidden talent you never dreamed you had. We have taught
people to decorate cakes, paint, do stained glass, make greeting cards and work in
all kinds of ways they didn’t think possible. Don’t be afraid to try. If you feel that
you have failed, just move on to something else. Everyone has talent, just in
different areas. Remember, there are no mistakes, just opportunities to make
something new.
Hobbies - from painting to basket weaving
When two people with creative minds marry, you never know what they’ll
think of next. Ray’s family are all very creative, including his sister, brother
and brother-in-law, and of course his Dad. And Joanie’s mother was always a
crafter, and her father sometimes was recruited to build “props” for some of
his mother’s ideas for wedding decor.
Ray and Joanie have easily carried on the family traditions of creativity. From
the beginning of our marriage, and even before, we have used art and
crafting to express ourselves and our personalities. One of the first projects
we worked on together was the designs for a retirement quilt for Joanie’s
dad. Ray drew the designs and Joanie and her sister figured out how to do
applique designs and embroidery to bring them to life on the quilt.
After the wedding, we learned how to do stained glass together. Ray again
made the designs, and Joanie did her own glass work while Ray worked on
his glass separately. From there, we did decorated cakes, gingerbread
houses with a group of ladies in Germany, counted cross stitch, more
embroidery, basket weaving, sewing, vintage dressing, oil painting, pencil
sketches, watercolor, airbrush, woodworking, decorative food designs, and
finally rubber stamping, embossing and hand-made greeting cards. Our
tastes may change from time to time, but we are never lacking for
inspiration and new ideas.
Screen printing, Stained Glass,
ceramic decals, Airbrush, Water
color, Oil Paintings, pen and ink,
pop-up cards, pad printing, video
taping, photo, web page design and
commercial flyers, wood work,
restored a 1968 VW. We could go
on, but the list of things we have
done or tried is just too long. Oh
yes, we even bought a limo once
just for fun, not business. So we
love artwork and crafts. Here are
just a few of the things we have
done.
We have made signs for years and have a
Roland Plotter/Cutter. The cutter is 24" and
can use some professional material. You can
feed a thin kitchen cutting mat through with
some removable roll-on glue on the mat to
hold cardstock.
We have made large pop-up boxes that took a
full 24" x 30". When you open the envelope the
card comes out and pops up into a house. We
used this one as a Christmas card. Check out the
pictures.
Airbrushing and painting. Painting
carries over to oil painting, tole
painting, water color and even
painting on some of the cards we
make. Love to airbrush. We have
airbrushed cakes, flowers, wood,
Christmas cards and more. It
brings out so much fine detail in
everything.
Our front door. We hand picked the
glass from Hudson Glass Co. in New
York. The beveled glass we got in
Germany. When we moved we took
the glass with us. Now we have built a
box with a light behind it for display.

At times I was asked to make gifts for some
higher ranking officers in 1983. Dieter
Niebaum was an aid to a one star general. I
was asked to design and airbrush the Space
Shuttle in the Air Force MAC colors. The
general worked on the shuttle at one time.
Military Air Lift Command was planning to
use the shuttle for putting satellites in space.
I liked it so much I made one for me, too.
The stained glass was a gift for a guy that
worked in three commands. I would make
the design on paper and they would approve
it. The painting below was my entry for the
25 years of the Minute Man Missiles. I took
first place but the design had too much
detail so they took the second one. Belt
buckles, cups, shirts and other items were
made. That's OK, we got the order for the
shirts and cups.

In 1984 I was asked to make a record and cassette
cover for two singers in Germany. Dixie and
Rochelle toured in Germany and sang for the
troops. The name of the group was Assurance. We
also made some custom shirts with the same logo
on the back. We both worked on this one. Lot's of
fun.

Joanies mom made our wedding cake. She also made the swans and the roses on the place cards. We had many place cards.
Retirement Quilt
1981 Joanie’s Dad retired from his salesman job with Kraft foods after 28 years. Joanie and her sister thought it would be a great idea to
make a quilt commemorating some of their main memories of their Dad’s work with Kraft. Joanie decided that her artistic ability wasn’t up to
the level it needed to be, so she asked her new friend Ray to help with the artwork. A romance was born and the rest is history. We were
married in 1981. We know the quilt really doesn’t mean anything to other people and it isn’t the quality a quilter would appreciate, but a
parent is always pleased when their children do something “special” for them.
Joanie’s Dad often
